You’ve Never Seen That Before: Pyrography!

Nowadays, as adults, when we are asked to paint a picture, most of us make a pretty stupid job of it. Often this is not even because the talent is missing. We are simply too insecure and inhibited when it comes to drawing and painting. When we were kids, we were more at ease – we were allowed to experiment with wax and watercolors or conjure up butterflies on paper using the smear technique.

Today we want to introduce you to a painting technique that is definitely not for children – but will leave you amazed at the results as if you were a child: Pyrography!

And here’s how

You need a sufficiently thick and beautiful piece of wood – keep in mind that grain and wood color will contribute to the visual effect. Now you should sketch out your motif. If you have trouble with this, you can also transfer it to the wood with carbon paper. To do so, simply lay both sheets on top of each other as shown in the video and tape them to the board.

Then, slowly trace the contours of your drawing with a wire-nib burner – available at hardware stores or craft supply stores.

Finally, you can treat the piece of wood with hard wax oil. It serves as a protective layer and makes the wood darker and more richly colored.
